Body Mass Index - BMI
Published by Diet Trials February 8th, 2006 in Losing weight, TheoryWhat does weight mean anyway? One of the ways to know where you stand in terms of health and weight is to use the Body Mass Index to work out what weight you should be for maximum health.
There are lots of Body Mass Index Calculators on the web that make it easier for you to get your BMI. Check out this site to calculate yours.
So I am 6′ 1″ and currently 17 stone 9 pounds (or 247 pounds). My BMI is 32.6. If you are 30.0 and above you are classified as obese. Great! To get to the level of being Overweight, and having a BMI of between 25.0 and 29.9, I need to be 16 stone 3 pounds. To get to the “normal” weight level I need to be 13 stone 7 pounds. Now to me if I was 13 and a half stone I would look really ill.

i have always wondered what the ‘boffins’ were talking about when mentioning BMI- now you have made it clear. Nothing to do with air planes then!!!! Seriously will go and check mine.
Hi Janette
Thanks for joining us. Did you check you BMI yesterday? What was your score if you would like to share it?
Hi folks plucked up courage and did my BMI—oh,dear i am classed as obese too!–just hoped against hope I might fit into the overweight. Well, not to be. That has really made me more determined to lose at least 2 stone then I should be ok. BMI actually 30.9 and I’m not tall like you!!
Would like to find out more about hypnosis but it does frighten me a little, can anyone really reassure me?
Hi to all us people who are trying to lose weight. Just watched programme on TV about obese people-WOW!! thought we had problems.Heaviest woman weighed in at 85 stone–BMI 186.4. She lost 65 stone but it did take 10 years and she hasn’t put it back on.Congratulations to her.
A man who appeared on Terry Wogan show many years ago had lost 50 stone in only 19 months( BMI 121.5 )and weighed in at 14 stone. Now the question I ask is
1/ it easier for men or women to lose weight?
2/ are women more likely to maintain their weight loss?
3/ is it better to reduce weight slowly?
Hi Mary
Firstly I would say that from personal experience that it is better for the body to reduce the weight slowly. I do not have a medical background so I am only stating my opinion. As for whether it is easier for men or women to lose weight and who is likely to maintain the weight loss, that’s hard to say. I generally think that it all depends on the individual and how they tackle the change of lifestyle. Dieting used to be about willpower but the Paul Mckenna diet is very much about changing the brain, and once that is altered then hopefully it stays with you.
