Weight Loss Medication – Orlistat (Xenical)

In the battle against weight loss, modern medicine has added diet pills to its arsenal. Today, the simplest way of losing weight is to take the pills and watch as the fat dissolves. However, as with anything, this weight loss technique has both advantages and disadvantages. Severe weight loss can dehydrate, fatigue, malnourish and shrivel you up like a raisin. If you use the extreme weight loss drug, Orlistat, you could be placing yourself at risk.

Xenical is the trade name that Orlistat is marketed under and it achieves its results by preventing the body from absorbing fat from whatever source. This results in reduced calorie intake and less fat, eventually leading to weight loss. When Orlistat is taken orally, three times a day before meals, it will prevent the retention of around 30% of fat that is taken in. All the bad fat passes safely through the digestive system.

The effectiveness of Xenical is questionable, since it reduces body mass by around 5%, but was only successful in around 50% of the people who volunteered for a year long clinical test. They were further disappointed when they subsequently regained the weight they lost when testing was completed and they stopped using the drug.

The common side effect associated with this weight loss drug is steatorrhea, a physical condition in which the subject suffers frequent, uncomfortable and loose bowel movements that are oily, with extra flatus. This is caused by the fat that has not been absorbed travelling through the large intestine. A long-term side effect of this drug was documented in an animal study carried out in 2006. It connected Orlistat to lesions that might lead to cancer being discovered in the colon.

Pfizer Slentrol – new dog diet pill

Wow! So they have now found a pill for fatty Fido. Is this the same as the pill for fatty people, Xenical? I’m told it works in the same way by blocking fat from being digested into the body. Giving Fido his pill might be dangerous though, Slentrol is made by Pfizer, you remember, they are the people that make Viagra! That could be interesting if Dad and Fido got their pills mixed up, pooch’s Pa poo-ing all over the carpet and Fido doing what Dad was hoping to do.

Dogs suffer in the same way as us humans if they become overweight and it can only be a good thing if they too can lose some excess pounds, but the owner still has to help the poor canine. In the same way as us, Fido has to cut back on his fatty foods and do some exercise, yes that means that you have to take doggy for a long walk and keep throwing the ball to him until both he and you are completely shot. Hey, have we hit on a new way to lose weight.

Fido’s medication is absolutely genuine though, it has even had approval from the FDA, thought they only looked at medicines for the like of you and me, seems not. Naturally if your Fido is fat, you will have to visit your Veterinary Surgery and convince them that you need the Slentrol, shouldn’t be difficult though as it costs around £1.00 per day.

New Weightloss drug – Slentrol

I have just been reading about a new weight loss drug, and started to get excited that it may be the cure to all my problems. But as it turns out Slentrol is a new diet pill for your dog. Apparently it blocks the digestion of fat in dogs but has nasty side effects if humans try and take it. I’ll be back with more info on Slentrol in the next day or so for you.

Will Acomplia / Zimulti get approval in the US?

I have been reading up a bit more on Acomplia, or do we now have to call it Zimulti and it seems that there is still more to be done to get Acomplia passed by the FDA. There is lots of information on this website about how to Buy Acomplia. The manufacturer of Acomplia / Zimulti, Sanofi-Aventis, is still adamant that this new weightloss drug will be released before the end of 2006. There is though no information from Sanofi as to what is causing the hold up. It seems that the FDA (US Food and Drug Administration) is still in constant discussion with the Acomplia manufacturers about it.

Sanofi are still confident that Acomplia / Zimulti will get the approval that is needed and is in the meantime collecting data from European patienst currently taking Acomplia to pass on to the FDA. This information from patients who have been taking Acomplia since June in the UK will help identify what side effects are to be expected in the US. It seems that for some reason the FDA are very cautious of approving Acomplia / Zimulti which has not helped the share price on Sanofi-Aventis.

Why do they have to do this….do they like to confuse us so that we are never sure what we are taking, or is it like giving plants and flowers in your garden really long latin names that no one can remember.

We have all got used to the word Acomplia, meaning weight loss drug that surpresses appetite. The magic ingredient of Acomplia is called Rimonabant which you may have heard of before.

You may also heard of Sanofi-Aventis who manufacture Acomplia / Rimonabant. This pharmaceutical company also manufacture along with many others wonder drugs, Ambien / Zolpidem which is a sleeping tablet.

When Acomplia finally gets released into the USA there are plans to rename Acomplia to Zimulti… why? What sort of name is Zimulti anyway? I really would like to meet the guy who has the job to make up names like Zimulti; not that Acomplia is any better a name!

Why do pharmaceutical companies do this? Is there a valid logical reason why a drug gets a different name in different countries? I know that we call them “chips” and in the USA they call them “fries” but it doesn’t mean we have to have 2 names for everything does it?

Problems getting Acomplia in the USA

Itâ€™s not very often that we in the UK get to try something out before the USA, whether we are talking technology or pharmaceuticalâ€¦ but with Acomplia we are ahead of the field. Acomplia has been available in the UK since June either online or prescribed my your doctor. As many of the Diet Trials readers have shown, taking Acomplia is straight forwards with minimal side effects and best of all it actually works to help with weight loss.

As the USA has an obesity problem worse than the UK it is clear why people are trying to buy it from the UK to send to the USA. There has been though a clamp down by the US Customs and if you are in the USA there is a risk that your shipment of Acomplia will get seized, as in the USA, Acomplia is still an unapproved drug. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) still have to give Acomplia the green light before it can be prescribed in the USA.

Acomplia / Rimonabant Diet Pill Approved

I posted an article back in February about a new wonder drug called Acomplia or Rimonabant and how it was near to getting approval.

It was released yesterday that Britain was the first country in the EU to be granted a license for Acomplia. Acomplia is meant to be able to reduce body weight by up to 10% and targets the parts of the body that control appetite, weight and energy use. It works by suppressing the appetite and therefore you reduce what you eat.

They are expecting that the drug will cost around Â£55 per month for the treatment and this could cost the NHS billions. At the moment Acomplia will only be available privately at first. Acomplia is manufactured by Sanofi Aventis and they believe that the cost of providing Acomplia to the obese population is far less than the cost the governments already have to spend on obesity.

The trials of Acomplia / Rimonabant have been very successful and a quarter of those tested lost over 10% of their body weight, and half of them lost more than 5%.

I could do with some Acomplia, not only to lose weight but it is also meant to help you give up smoking. Can you imaging the UK in 10 years time, all these non smoking, slim beingsâ€¦.marvellous.

New Diet Pill – Acomplia / Rimonabant

There has been talk for some time about a new experimental weight loss drug called Acomplia or Rimonabant. It is now being said that Acomplia or Rimonabant is getting closer to approval by the FDA.

The new drug has been undergoing testing and trials over the last few years. The tests with Acomplia against a placebo has shown that it is effective and does show sustained weight loss after two years of taking the drug. The overweight adults who took Acomplia had lost significantly more weight than those not taking Acomplia. The test also showed that it had increased the levels of HDL cholesterol which is good for you.

Acomplia or Rimonabant works by reducing the appetite, blocking certain receptors in the brain. Those that take Acomplia can expect to lose 10% of their body weight in a year. All sounds good to me. I know that dieting isn’t the way to go, and Paul McKenna is right in what he says about changing the way we look at food, but to me if I wasn’t hungry then I wouldn’t eat, or if my appetite was surpressed I may eat less. Plus if all I have to do is remember to take a tablet everyday, and I already have to to balance my thyroid level, then am I onto a winner?
